Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye) service
The conjunctiva is the mucous membrane that covers the sclera (white of the eye and the inside of the eyelids). Various agents can cause inflammation of the conjunctiva such as bacteria, viruses, chemicals and preservatives in medicines. Typical symptoms are a red eye with a full, "sandy" sensation sometimes accompanied by discharge with sticking and crusting of the eyelashes and lids. Vision is usually not impaired. Various appropriate methods, including antibiotics, are used to treat "pink eye." An ophthalmologist should be consulted when symptoms appear.
