A native of Santa Rosa, California, Dr. Sullivan graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1960 and completed his medical degree at Georgetown University. After internship at Ohio State University, he served two years as a flight surgeon in the US Army Medical Corps. Following a year in family practice, Dr. Sullivan specialized in ophthalmology at the University of California, San Francisco. His first postgraduate fellowship was done at St. John's Ophthalmic Hospital in Jerusalem. He was then awarded a Senior Fullbright scholarship for an additional year study at Melbourne University in Australia. Another year of fellowship study was spent in oculoplastic surgery under the tutelage of Dr. Crowell Beard in association with the University of California, San Francisco.
Dr. Sullivan joined the Eye Medical Clinic in 1973. He has a Clinical Professor faculty appointment at UCSF where he shares teaching responsibilities for training residents and oculoplastic fellows. He has authored more than two dozen publications in journals and textbooks and is the recipient of the American Academy of Ophthalmology Honor Award. He also serves as an examiner for the American Board of Ophthalmology. For more than ten years, Dr. Sullivan has been named by his peers in Woodward & White's survey as one of the "Best Doctors in America" and is listed by San Jose Magazine as one of the "Top Doctors." He is past president of Prevent Blindness Northern California, the Fredrick C. Cordes Eye Society and the Peninsula Eye Society. Dr. Sullivan practices general ophthalmology on patients of all ages. He has a busy cataract practice utilizing the latest techniques of sutureless microsurgery and multifocal implants as well as his special interest in oculoplastic and reconstructive surgery. He is a Medicare participating physician.
