Dr. Robert J. Masi's special interest areas in ophthalmology include the cornea, external disease, cataract microsurgery, and laser and refractive surgery.
A native New Yorker, Dr. Masi earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in mathematics from Fordham University. He received a Doctor of Medicine degree from New York Medical College, where he was elected to the National Honor Medical Society, Alpha Omega Alpha.
His internship and residency in internal medicine at The New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center included intensive clinical experience in oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and in rheumatic diseases at The Hospital for Special Surgery.
Continuing his training in ophthalmology at Cornell, Dr. Masi served as chief resident at The New York Hospital and fellow in ophthalmology at Cornell Medical College. In 1977-78, he became a Heed Foundation Fellow at the Francis I. Proctor Foundation for Research in Ophthalmology at the University of California, San Francisco, where he specialized in diseases and surgery of the cornea and the anterior segment of the eye.
Upon completion of his fellowship term, Dr. Masi joined the Eye Medical Clinic of Santa Clara Valley and is currently an attending ophthalmologist at O'Connor Hospital in San Jose as well as the University of California Hospitals and Clinics in San Francisco. Dr. Masi is Past President of the O'Connor Hospital Medical Staff and he is currently Chairman of the O'Connor Hospital Board.
Board certified in both ophthalmology and internal medicine, Dr. Masi is Associate Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of California, San Francisco and Research Associate at the Francis I. Proctor Foundation. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American College of Surgeons as well as a member of many other professional medical organizations.
The author of numerous articles in the medical literature, Dr. Masi also serves as clinical consultant for several pharmaceutical companies. He is married to Dr. Marie B. Britz, a San Jose dermatologist, and has two sons.
